Clark Gable braves the Alaskan wilderness in hopes of striking it rich in this Western loosely based on Jack London's novel. Needing cash for a stake in Alaska's gold fields, prospector Jack Thornton (Gable) adopts a sled dog, Buck, who helps him win a bet. With Buck in the lead, Jack and his pal Shorty (Jack Oakie) set out in search of gold but are sidetracked when they meet Claire (Loretta Young), whose miner husband abandoned her in the hills.
