Passionate and successful Minnesota State University head football coach Hayden Fox (Craig T. Nelson) is crushed when his longtime girlfriend, Christine (Shelley Fabares), decides to end their relationship in this hit television sitcom's third season. To make matters worse, Hayden must miss a game because of a bad tooth, politely interact with his archrival (Pam Stone) and deal with his star player (Christopher B. Duncan) getting hurt.
