Michael Crichton's second feature film follows Dr. Susan Wheeler (Geneviève Bujold), a resident whose best friend winds up on life support after undergoing a routine procedure. When Susan investigates, she discovers that her friend's death wasn't an isolated incident. Susan airs her concerns to her boyfriend, Dr. Mark Bellows (Michael Douglas), but he doesn't want her suspicions interfering with his quest to become chief resident.
