Shirley Booth (in her film debut) took home a Best Actress Oscar for her superb performance as Lola Delaney, a maudlin, slovenly housewife whose world is shaken by her recovering alcoholic husband (Burt Lancaster) and pretty young boarder Marie Buckholder (Terry Moore). Marie's presence and her curiosity about her childless landlords set the story in motion in this vintage tearjerker also starring Richard Jaeckel.
