When widowed Ella Connors (Jane Fonda) gets pressured to sell her failing cattle farm to her unscrupulous and powerful ex-lover, Jacob Ewing (Jason Robards), she enlists the aid of her antagonistic neighbor, Frank Athearn (James Caan). As Ella and Frank fight stampedes, betrayal and sabotage to rope enough livestock to pay the ranch's debts, they begin feeling a growing affection for each other in this gritty Western directed by Alan J. Pakula.
