Sam Neill and Greta Scacchi star in this adaptation of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" set in rural Australia in the 1920s. Jack and his niece work hard running the family farm to support Jack's brother-in-law, Alexander, a literary critic living in London. The trouble begins when Alexander returns to the farm with a beautiful young wife, who will soon bewitch Jack as well as the local doctor, Max.
