Mirroring the epic poem "Ramayana" and the tale of the ever-virtuous Sita, this film follows a nautch girl (played by the beautiful Rekha) who sacrifices all for the love of a blind musician (Sanjeev Kumar). Directed by Raj Khosla, the story exemplifies the demanding and unreasonable expectations often imposed on women throughout history, as the servant endures her own "Agni Pariksha" (test by fire) to prove her love.
