Royal Canadian Mountie Dan Candy (Donald Sutherland) tours the plains of Saskatchewan with his partner, Malcolm Grant (Kevin McCarthy). After the duo arrests a Cree Indian for stealing a government cow out of desperate hunger, the angry culprit escapes from jail and kills Malcolm. Dan vows to track down the man, receiving little help from his fellow constables or the native people. Claude Fournier directs this Western based on a true story.
