Filmmaker Tim Kirkman heads to North Carolina to gain a better understanding of Jesse Helms's successful political career and anti-gay ideology through interviews with various members of the community, including Matthew Shepard. Kirkman, a gay man and North Carolina native, talks to both Helms's supporters and detractors, including family, friends, religious leaders, a gay mayor, activists, writers and everyday citizens.
