Freedom fighter Dinanath (Amitabh Bachchan) went up against the British to win India's independence; now he must fight to keep his country unified. When his wife (Sharmila Tagore) is forced to leave him (due to leprosy), Dinanath seeks refuge at Bharat Nagar, where four crime bosses use him as a decoy. In the midst of this chaos, Dinanath tries to bring about reform and teach his fellow citizens a lesson about brotherly love.
