Devdas's (Dilip Kumar) father disapproves of his relationship with childhood sweetheart Paro (Suchitra Sen) and sends him away to Calcutta. Heartbroken, Devdas eventually returns home -- only to learn that Paro has married an older man with grown children. The devastated Devdas returns to Calcutta, where his life spirals downward. Vyjayanthimala co-stars as dancer Chandramukhi, who falls for the inconsolable Devdas.
