Notorious bank robber John Dillinger (Warren Oates) has turned into a folk hero among Depression-era Americans, capturing their fancy with the adventures of his criminal gang. But the clock could be running out on Dillinger and crew: G-man Melvin Purvis (Ben Johnson) has the gang in his crosshairs, and he won't rest till they're all in the slammer … or six feet under.
