Hoping to build a mill in the wake of a devastating drought, a wealthy landowner (Murad) threatens to seize the property of Bengali farmer Shambu (Balraj Sahni), who must then take his wife (Nirupa Roy) and child to Calcutta, where the father finds work as a rickshaw driver. Considered one of the greatest of all Bollywood films, the tear-jerking classic won the Prix Internationale at the 1954 Cannes Film Festival.
