Rookie driver Jimmy Bly (Kip Pardue) is pressured by owner Carl Henry (Burt Reynolds) to accept Joe Tanto (Sylvester Stallone) as a mentor. Joe's career ended in an accident, and while working on Jimmy's trust and a comeback, Joe faces a relentless reporter and an ex-wife (Gina Gershon) married to his rival.
