Dutchman

Nominated for the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, Dutchman is a powerful adaptation of LeRoi Jones's provocative play. In thematically appropriate black-and-white, the film introduces Clay (Al Freeman Jr.), a conservative, young African-American, and Lula, an unstable Caucasian woman (Shirley Knight) who tries to seduce him. During a New York subway ride, their sexually and racially charged byplay erupts into violence.
