As the seventh season opens, Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) returns from rehab after completing treatment for the narcotics addiction that plagued him since he was stabbed in the ER. Later, a love triangle develops between Carter, Nurse Lockhart (Maura Tierney) and Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic). Guest stars include James Belushi, James Cromwell and Sally Field, who earned an Emmy for her appearance as Lockhart's bipolar mother.
