Fennimore Truscott (Alec Guinness), a retired judge, suspects his neighbor of having seduced his wife many years earlier. Propelled by boredom and suspicion, Truscott carefully develops a case against the alleged adulterer, seeking answers to the terrible questions that have haunted him for so long. But his wife's presumed indiscretions are only the tip of the iceberg, as Truscott begins to question the paternity of the man he raised as his son.
