Chronicling the career of noted Russian filmmaker Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein (played by Simon McBurney) from 1921 until his death in 1948, this moving drama reveals the formative experiences that served as inspiration for the artist's future masterpieces. Alternately praising and criticizing his home country through his work, the antifascist Eisenstein eventually moved to Hollywood before returning to his homeland in his final years.
