Exploring themes of claustrophobia and family, Mexican director Arturo Ripstein tells the true story of a rat poison maker (Claudio Brook) who holds his family under house arrest for nearly two decades to prevent them from being corrupted by the outside world. Not surprisingly, the situation becomes untenable as the children reach adolescence and balk at their isolation in this hauntingly surreal film.
