Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar (Charlton Heston), aka El Cid, unites warring factions and saves 11th century Spain from invasion by Muslim hordes. Sophia Loren is ravishing as Jimena, who loves Rodrigo despite the fact that he killed her father during an honorable duel. Anthony Mann directs and Miklos Rozsa contributes the vaulting score for the movie, which is based on historical events and features some stunning battle scenes.
