Elegy of the Land

Renowned Russian filmmaker Aleksandr Sokurov explores the emotional and spiritual significance of the land in these two early short films. "Maria" pays homage to an industrious Russian peasant whose ancient methods of growing flax died with her; then, "Last Day of a Rainy Summer" examines the lives of members of a collective farm community in 1978, documenting their daily routines just as their lifestyle is beginning to vanish.
