Emperor Jones

The legendary Paul Robeson (best known for his rendition of "Old Man River" in the 1936 film version of Show Boat) stars in this winning adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's play. When a Pullman porter (Robeson) loses his temper, he's fired and winds up behind bars. A stint on the torturous chain gang lands him in even hotter water when he kills a white guard. To escape certain death, he heads for Haiti, where he crowns himself emperor.
