Ex-gridiron star Wood Newton (Burt Reynolds) returns to his quaint Arkansas hometown to coach the long-suffering high school football team aided by a hapless assistant coach: math teacher Herman Stiles (the Emmy-winning Michael Jeter). The charming, low-key sitcom also stars Marilu Henner as Wood's wife, Hal Holbrook as her grudge-holding father, Charles Durning as the crusty Dr. Elldridge and Ossie Davis as the laconic narrator Ponder Blue.
