But while a sheep farmer (Alan Bates), a landowner (Peter Finch) and a soldier (Terence Stamp) vie for her affections, only one can win her heart. Directed by John Schlesinger and based on the novel by Thomas Hardy, this sweeping romance chalked up an Oscar nod for original score.
