Long after being thrown out for his illegitimate birth, engineer Zanga (Fily Traoré) returns to his Mali village to participate in the construction of a waterworks system and try to learn his father's identity. But when a local youth drowns in the river, the town elders believe that water spirit Faro has been angered by Zanga's return. When the engineer refuses to leave, the village chief decrees that Faro must be placated with a sacrifice.
