This atmospheric adaptation of the H.E. Bates novel of the same name stars Embeth Davidtz as Bella Ford, an unwed mother who finds sanctuary with kindhearted lamplighter Ben Wainwright (Tom Bell) and his family after suffering a miscarriage. But their once-tranquil Victorian home becomes a cauldron of tension as Ben's three strapping sons vie for the affections of beautiful Bella. Greg Wise plays the cad who seduced and abandoned her.
