Czech new wave guru Vera Chytilova fashions a story of biblical proportions with this deeply affecting film rife with symbolism. A husband and wife seeking solace at a retreat partake of a strange fruit that they've been forbidden to eat, unleashing the woman's desire to seek out the perpetrator of a series of heinous crimes. No one knows why she's transformed by her gustatory choices, but if she doesn't abandon her quest, she may be in danger.
