Director Helma Sanders-Brahms takes an unflinching look at the devastating post-World War II experience of many German women and, especially, children, who had to reconcile their national identities with the atrocities committed by their own people. Through vivid cinematic imagery combined with actual footage from the period, the filmmaker uses a dramatic story to give the audience intimate insight into her own tragic beginnings.
