In this quiet thriller from German auteur Christian Petzold, a Frenchwoman (Marianne Basler) returns to Berlin time and again, unable to stop searching for her kidnapped daughter -- until an encounter with a drifter convinces her she's found the girl. As the fragile Frenchwoman reaches out to her would-be daughter (Julia Hummer), she's drawn into a world that includes the young woman's bad-girl lover (Sabine Timoteo).
