When Kate (Rita Tushingham), a country girl in 1960s Ireland, moves to Dublin to board with the far more sophisticated Baba (Lynn Redgrave), she meets Eugene (Peter Finch), a worldly, middle-aged writer who is immediately taken with Kate's naïve charm. The two quickly become entangled in an intense love affair, sending Kate's rural family up in arms when they get wind of the scandal. Desmond Davis's drama won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
