In his feature film debut, acclaimed writer-director Philip Kaufman presents an oddly symbolic tale about an old man (Lou Gilbert) who rises from Lake Michigan to wander the streets of Chicago, encountering various faces along the way. While Kaufman's story has stirred the imagination of countless critics, the most common interpretation is that it's a modern-day retelling of the Biblical story of Elijah, the Hebrew prophet.
