An actress (Annie Shizuka Inoh) studying for the role of an anti-Japanese guerilla in 1940s China finds herself caught between the pain of two generations when a strange man torments her with secrets of the past. Acclaimed Taiwanese director Hsiao-hsien Hou dedicates this film to victims of the anti-Communist purges of the 1950s. The intricately plotted epic was nominated for the Golden Palm award at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.
