Honest Moscow police inspector Arkady Renko (William Hurt) persistently investigates a mysterious triple homicide in which the mutilated bodies have been wiped clean of identification, despite his superiors' warnings that the case is linked to the KGB. The labyrinthine trail leads Renko to New York to question corrupt fur magnate Jack Osborne (Lee Marvin) and William Kirwill (Brian Dennehy), a take-no-prisoners cop with his own agenda.
