Keeping a tight hold over his kingdom by doling out punishment, the sadistic King Goto III (Pierre Brasseur) rules his island with a cold, iron heart. But when a criminal slated to die in one of the king's regular death matches informs him that the queen (Ligia Branice) is having an affair, the enraged monarch's reaction could ultimately end his reign. Walerian Borowczyk directs his first live-action film after making his name as an animator.
