Heart o' the Hills

  (1919)
America's first film sweetheart, Mary Pickford, stars in this silent film (one of four she made in 1919), a backwoods melodrama about land-grabbing in the mountains of Kentucky. The movie gave Pickford the chance to extend her range from her previous half-dozen parts; the film's brutal subject matter and frank treatment of poverty were a huge change of pace from her usual lighthearted fare. Joseph De Grasse and Sidney Franklin direct.
