This Merchant-Ivory film stars Greta Scacchi as Olivia, an Englishwoman embroiled in a secret romance with a local (Shashi Kapoor) in 1920s India. Decades later, Olivia's great-niece, Ann (Julie Christie), returns to the country and learns of the affair and the ensuing pregnancy, which left Olivia shunned by her peers. Ann eventually relives history when she falls for an Indian man (Zakir Hussain) herself and also gets pregnant.
