Delusion and madness are at the heart of Marco Bellocchio's adaptation of playwright Luigi Pirandello's masterpiece. Marcello Mastroianni is a modern aristocrat who begins a life of fabrication and fantasy after he conks his head and believes he's Henry IV, Emperor of the Roman Empire. Friends join him, reveling in his fantasy as they all dress in costumes and assume the roles of historical figures. Co-stars Claudia Cardinale.
