Brian De Palma helms this film about Vietnam veteran John Rubin (Robert De Niro), who takes up residence in a dingy New York apartment and tries to jump-start a movie-directing career in the porn industry. He wins over porn king Joe Banner (Allen Garfield) by proposing to film the indecent exploits of his neighbors, as seen from across the street. When his plan fails miserably, John decides to join an extremist theatre group instead.
