As Irish ward boss Matt Stanton (Robert Foxworth) tries to win the Brooklyn mayoralty from the ruthless Ned Quinn (George Rose), Stanton's wife, Kathleen (Faye Dunaway), worries the opposition will discover she married her husband in a civil ceremony -- and not in the Catholic Church. But a bigger and more destructive skeleton hides in Stanton's closet in this sterling adaptation of William Alfred's play, which helped propel Dunaway to stardom.
