Country singer Buck Bonham (Willie Nelson) loves life on the road, but his constant absences cause a strain between him and his wife, Viv (Dyan Cannon). When Buck's longtime guitarist, Garland Ramsey (Slim Pickens), decides to retire, he suggests that his daughter Lily (Amy Irving) replace him. As Buck and Lily find themselves on the brink of stardom, they struggle with their increasingly strong feelings for each other.
