Aging Parisian actor Gilbert Valence (Michel Piccoli) is in the prime of his career until the night he learns that his family has been killed in a car accident. Undefeated, Valence struggles to care for his orphaned grandson and continue with his daily routines. But when his agent forces him into an English-language film of James Joyce's Ulysses, Valence begins to feel overwhelmed and quickly changes his situation, as he contemplates old age.
