With a tab topping $1.8 million and ambitious special effects, this epic Hollywood film was one of the most costly of its day, retelling the infamous tale of the cow that supposedly started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Alice Brady won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as washerwoman Molly O'Leary, whose two grown sons -- a rogue (Tyrone Power) and an attorney (Don Ameche) -- are as much at odds personally as they are professionally.
