When sculptor Anil (Raj Kapoor) asks the poor but beautiful Asha (Nargis) to model for him, they secretly fall in love and Asha becomes pregnant. But while he's out of town, Anil suffers a disfiguring accident and refuses to face Asha in his condition. As Anil delays his return, the villagers shame Asha, who agrees to marry local man Jeevan (Jeevan) to lessen her disgrace. Will Anil come back in time to claim Asha for his own?
