Looking to score big at a dog-racing track, racketeer Johnny Eager (Robert Taylor) finds his plans stymied by the prosecutor (Edward Arnold) who sent Johnny to stir. But all bets are off when his encounter with the barrister's stepdaughter, Liz (Lana Turner), puts Johnny in the driver's seat. Playing Johnny's loyal but self-loathing confidante, Jeff Hartnett, Van Heflin netted a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
