U.S. Marshal Johnny Reno (Dana Andrews) has a tough job ahead of him -- keeping at bay the men and women of Stone Junction, who are frothing at the mouth with vengeance. They want to attack a man who's sitting in jail awaiting his trial for murder, instead of allowing him his day in court. But the steadfast Reno believes that the accused, guilty or not, deserves a fair shake; unfortunately, he may run into big trouble for toeing the line.
