With incredible stoicism and no clear motive, councilman Isaak Kohler (Maximilian Schell) shoots his friend in front of a crowd of onlookers, including attorney Felix Spat (Thomas Heinze). Arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison, Kohler engages Spat to appeal his conviction; Spat is conflicted but financially desperate, so he accepts. Director Hans W. Geissendörfer's courtroom drama garnered a Golden Globe nomination.
