After a series of exploitive and demeaning jobs, she eventually becomes a prostitute, hoping to escape crushing poverty and transcend her social position. Paul Verhoeven directed this poignant period drama before making a name for himself in Hollywood. Rutger Hauer co-stars as a wealthy banker who becomes Katie's lover.
