While on holiday in turn-of-the-century Yalta, bored Moscow banker Dmitri (Aleksey Batalov) and the wealthy young Anna (Iya Savvina) meet and fall in love. Both married, the star-crossed lovers pledge to see each other only once a year. Director Iosif Kheifits's bittersweet portrait of love is based on the Chekov story of the same name. The overlooked Russian masterwork was nominated for the Palme d'Or award at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival.
