This "Nova" episode travels back in time to the last Ice Age to solve one of the great mysteries of paleontology: What happened to the mammoths? These mighty beasts suddenly died off about 13,000 years ago, but scientists still aren't certain why. The investigation focuses on a controversial new theory that attributes the animals' demise to the explosive breakup of a comet over the Great Lakes area, igniting raging forest fires.
