When a publishing magnate embezzles his company's money and leaves town, his clerk, Amédée Lange (Rene Lefevre), manages to salvage what's left and reestablish the business with the help of his co-workers. The venture proves to be a success, so when the former owner shows up to claim profits, Lange grows murderous at the thought. Filmmaker Jean Renoir directs, bringing a political touch to his cinematic masterpiece.
